All Washed Up

What else does the article say?” Mike asked.

Joe began to read out loud. “ ‘While the world searches for the canine champ, Baxter’s owners in Bayport wait for news about their pet.’ ”

“Bayport?” Frank cried. “That’s it! Sneakers is really Baxter, the Frisbee-catching dog!”

Mike looked relieved. “Then he may not be Chet after all.”

“Excuse me?” Frank asked Lisa, the woman behind the desk. “Can we borrow this magazine?”

“You can keep it if you’d like,” Lisa said. “We’re done reading it.”

“Thanks,” Joe said.

Frank rolled up the magazine and stuck it in his back pocket. “Wait until we show this to Zack. He’s going to flip—”

Frank was interrupted by a loud clatter. Suddenly, Sneakers ran out from behind the curtain. He was covered with pink soap suds.

“Sneakers!” Frank shouted.

“He’s soaked with tomato juice,” Joe said.

Curtis dashed out, waving a towel. “Get back here, you beast!” he shouted.

More soapy dogs slipped past Curtis into the waiting room. One terrier had curlers on her head. A bulldog was wearing a plastic shower cap.

Sneakers shook pink soap suds all over the waiting room. “Yuck!” Joe cried. The walls and furniture were covered with pink splats.
